If you are counting calories; or even counting on living long don't even think of making these brownies. They're a quarter butter; a quarter chocolate; a quarter sugar and a quarter nuts.
There's no flour in this version so you can have a jolly think about the calories you're saving.Those who have loved ones may care to assess their motives for making them.
- 225g 70% cocoa solids chocolate £3.80 for two bars
- 225g butter £1.25
- 10ml vanilla extract £0.44
- 200g caster sugar £0.25
- 3 eggs £0.75
- 150g ground almonds £0.75
- 100g chopped walnuts (I think optional) £1.08
Makes sixteen brownies at £9.35 or £0.58 each excluding labour. Add in £10 for labour cost gives £1.20 per brownie.

Recipe:
- Get the oven heating to 170 degrees C. Line a 22cm square dish with foil.
- Put 225g butter and 225g chocolate in a bowl and microwave for 90 seconds to melt.
- Mix and add 200g sugar; two teaspoons of vanilla; 150g ground almonds; 100g chopped walnuts. Mix well. Beat three eggs into the mix.
- Scrape into the cooking dish and flatten the mix into the corners.
- Bake in the middle of the oven for 25 minutes. It's now cooked on top and soft inside.
- Cool a bit, cut to make 16 squares and put in the fridge to firm up.
