Cooking weights, measures and cheats

A pint of peas
One pint of peas serves 4 as a side dish. Fill a pint beer glass with frozen peas. Add kettle hot water almost to the top and microwave for 3 minutes.

A mug of porridge for two
A mug full (250 ml) of porridge oats serves two. Tip the oats into a bowl and add 1 mug of milk; 1 mug of water and a pinch of salt. Microwave for 3-4 minutes, stir and leave for another minute. Sprinkle with sugar, add a dash of milk and drizzle with squeezy condensed milk.
Both Quaker and Jordans Jumbo oats make a more textured porridge. Read the box for the cooking time as this varies.

A tea cup of porridge for one
A small cup (eg tea cup) of porridge oats is 40g and serves one. Tip into a bowl and add 1 tea cup of milk; 1 tea cup of water and a bit of salt. Microwave for 3-4 minutes, stir and leave for another minute.

A mug of rice for 2-3
If you saw how rice was walked on before it was packaged you'd rinse the rice before use.
Tip a mug full (250 ml) of rice into a bowl and add 2 mugs of water and a pinch of salt.
Microwave for 10 minutes. Break up and serve using a fork.
Colour option: put a drop each of red and yellow food colouring on the surface. Use a fork to mix when you're ready to serve the rice.
Flavour option: add as much saffron as you can afford

I am on a mission to exile gravy from the UK
Make a nice sauce instead of gravy. Or pour over herbs in oil. If you've used fresh, carefully prepared and carefullly chosen meat, please don't spoil it with the stale stock flavours of preserved chicken; boiled beef or vegetable stew.
